Friends, I recently offered Mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center at Minnesota State University in Mankato. What a blessing it was. The enthusiasm and energy of the students was inspiring, and we were surrounded by the saints—our Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, St. Faustina, St. Thomas More, St. Teresa of Kolkata, and St. John Paul II.
I preached about how our readings (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 and Luke 20:27-38 ) break us out of the soul-suffocating secularism that is bedeviling a lot of people today, especially young people. They are so unhappy—but is that any surprise when they have no sense of the transcendent? Only God can satisfy the restless longing of the human heart and the searching questions of the human mind.
