How to Understand the Scientific Revolution—Lawrence M. Principe

August 11, 2023

Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University in the Departments of the History of Science and Technology and of Chemistry. In his talk at the 2023 Wonder Conference, he shows that the concept of an inherent conflict between science and religion is a product of the late nineteenth century crafted largely for political, philosophical, and personal reasons and perpetuated to our own day for similar ends. Studies of the Scientific Revolution by modern historians indicate that religious motivations lay at the heart of the scientific investigations of the period.
