Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University in the Departments of the History of Science and Technology and of Chemistry. Studies of the Scientific Revolution by modern historians indicate that religious motivations lay at the heart of the scientific investigations of the period.
