The Sacred Heart devotion grew in the 1670s with the mystical visions of the French Visitation nun St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The pierced Sacred Heart is a particularly powerful symbol of the divine hesed or “tender mercy” embodied in Jesus; we see it in his healings, his outreach to sinners, his consistent offer of forgiveness. Indeed, the word “mercy” is derived from the Latin misericordia—the suffering of the heart.
