Amigos, el Evangelio de hoy nos muestra un retrato de nuestro Dios, que es pródigo. El padre representa a Dios cuya naturaleza misma es dar, un Dios que simplemente es amor. Y el hijo menor representa a todos nosotros los pecadores que solemos entender mal cómo acceder al amor divino.

Como Dios existe solo en forma de regalo, Su vida no puede convertirse en posesión. En vez de ello, sólo se “obtiene” al transmitirla, sólo en la medida en que se regala. Cuando nos aferramos a ella, desaparece, acorde con una especie de física espiritual.

En la parábola, la palabra en griego para “país distante” es chora makra, que significa, literalmente, “el gran vacío”. Tratar de convertir el don divino en una posesión del ego termina necesariamente en nada, en el no ser, en el vacío.

San Juan Pablo II formuló este principio como “la ley del don”: tu ser aumenta en la medida en que lo regalas. Si aferrarse y poseer son signos del chora makra, entonces la ley del regalo es la dinámica que define la Casa del Padre, donde la mejor ropa, el anillo, y el ternero engordado son ofrecidos siempre.
