In 2018, Bishop Barron participated in the “Talks at Google” series by addressing Google staff on the topic of “Religion and the Opening Up of the Mind.” This talk on dialogue and on respecting each other’s dignity was not only addressed to the Catholic community at Google but especially to the non-religious audience there.
Addressing people in the public square is very much at the heart of the mission of Word on Fire. As Bishop Barron said at the beginning of his talk at Google, he was delighted to speak at one of the most significant cultural centers in the world. Bishop Barron has also addressed secular institutions like the FBI and Amazon.
At Google, Bishop Barron explained how religion often gets a bad rap as superstitious, subrational, and opposed to the mind. However, he argued that religion is precisely the opposite—that religion, authentically construed, actually opens up the mind and the will.
