Mystery of God

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris vigorously attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great.
How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God?

SAMPLES

Bishop Robert Barron reaches into the rich intellectual tradition of Catholicism, using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pope Benedict XVI, to uncover a clear, yet sophisticated, understanding of what we mean by “God”.

Who is God? And why does he matter? Watch this series and you'll not only learn the answers yourself, but you'll discover how to share them with others - especially those who no longer believe.

You can watch the video and then probe more deeply into Bishop Barron’s message either individually or in a group by using the companion Study Guide, which is divided into sections that correspond to each part of Bishop Barron’s presentation. The Study Guide was written by Catholic author, Trent Horn, an apologist at Catholic Answers, compiled under the direction and approval of Bishop Barron. Trent has relevant experience in this area as one of his books is Answering Atheism: How to Make the Case for God with Logic and Charity.

Each section of the study guide provides a detailed commentary on the video and “Questions for Understanding" based on the video presentation, Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  Each section also includes “Questions for Application" that help you connect the material to your own life and experience.

For group study, you can present the program in seven 90-minute sessions.

Each session includes video viewing and small group discussion of Study Guide questions. Participants read the commentary in the study guide and prepare the questions before the small group discussion. This preparation can be accomplished either before or after they view the video, as the Commentary in each lesson is very detailed.

The Leader’s Kit provides essential resources for group discussion leaders, including the DVD set, lessons, facilitator guide, answer key and 10 apologetics handbooks.

Leaders can also register for a free training webinar which teaches the best ways to run an effective Mystery of God study group.

Lesson 1: Atheism and What We Mean by "God"

There are lots of views about God. Some see him as a mythical fairy in the sky, others as the supreme being. Some consider him a threat to our freedom. But for Christians, God is not one being among many. He's not a competitor to our flourishing. God is that than which nothing greater can be thought, the strange and unique source of being itself. Before discussing anything about God, we must become clear about one question: who is God?
