Spirituality: Climbing Life's Mountains

From the base to the summit, the experience of climbing a mountain provides a perfect analogy of how to surmount the challenges in our lives. Seminarian Christopher Kerzich offers his reflection on this adventure here.

I recently sat with a friend outside a cabin overlooking the Ziller Valley, Austria talking about which mountain would climb the following morning. Map in hand, we examined the altitudes of the surrounding peaks. Always up for a good adventure, I pointed at the tallest peak in the valley and said, “How about that one!” Referring to the map my friend mentioned that, “the Ahornspitz,” is about 3,000 meters to the summit (about 10,000 feet).

“We can try but it might take most of the day,” He said. “Did you bring your hiking boots?”

I responded in the negative, blaming the airline’s baggage limitations. He suggested we head out after Mass the next morning and see how far we could get.

Sometimes the path gets foggy and we can’t see the road ahead of us... Continue on the journey.

Soon after we began our climb, we encountered a dense fog. The mist was everywhere, and we could only see the path directly in front of us. Although the visibility was quite poor we decided to continue hiking in the hopes that the fog would eventually clear. This experience demonstrated a clear parallel to the paths we take throughout our lives. How many times does life’s path become limited by fog? How do we respond when this mist overwhelms our senses? When we encounter obscurity in our lives, we must continue our journey and pray for the Lord to guide our steps and hearts to clearer vistas.

Our perspective can overwhelm our senses and believed abilities... Take these journeys one step at a time.

In the late morning, the fog began to clear, and I wished it would come back after seeing the intimidating peak up close. The giant rock shooting up from the earth made us look so small. Although I had earned the Climbing Merit Badge in Boy Scouts, I felt quite unprepared for this challenge. My friend asked if we should continue or return to safer terrain. I said I wanted to continue, one step at a time.

Often in life, sight of what lies ahead can overwhelm us. The stress of getting everything done or completing a variety of projects can seem so daunting. It helps to adjust our outlook to take life one step at a time. We also need to be aware that Christ, Our Lady and the saints walk alongside us on our earthly journey. If we need help with our perspective, which I did on that mountain, we can always ask our divine guides for assistance.

There are situations in life we might not be prepared for... Before acting, sit and pray!

Somehow, I knew my lack of boots would come back to haunt me. We got to the point where hiking turned into climbing, where the red marks that were previously for guiding our feet along the path turned into points where we should put our hands. The rocky terrain was covered with the morning’s moisture, and, since I lacked proper shoes, I started slipping. My friend climbed on ahead of me and I began to reassess my situation. I sat down and prayed, asking the mountaineer Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassatti for help.

I was in a situation that I was unprepared for, faced with an unexpected dilemma. I reviewed my options. The easiest choice was to return to safe ground. Another was to stress out in the face of a challenge. I chose a third option—I sat still, prayed and found peace. I realized that, in circumstances that seem out of my control, the best option is prayer.

The view from the top makes life’s struggles and frustrations seem quite small.

Continuing to climb, I realized we would probably make it to the summit. I was grateful that I would likely overcome the “wall” I previously thought insurmountable. Before making it to the summit, however, I faced one more challenge—walking along a ledge while holding a metal cord attached to the mountain with nothing but emptiness below. If I had experienced this challenge earlier in our journey it would have been significantly harder, but I made it because of what I had already experienced that day.

Like this journey, when we face life’s challenges, and through God’s grace overcome them, the challenges we encounter in the future seem smaller. This became evident when we ascended to the summit. Above the clouds and “on top of the world” all of the challenges of the day seemed quite small. The stressful, the painful, heart wrenching experiences of life didn’t matter. The fears we faced during the day didn’t matter either. This is what I imagine life in heaven to be like: the struggles, frustrations and temptations of our earthly life no longer matter. What we found on the summit only strengthened this image: a giant wooden cross secured to the top of the mountain. It was as if Christ was telling take up our crosses on earth and follow him to eternal life—a helpful reminder for all of us still on our earthly hikes toward heaven.
