Lent: Gospel Reflections from CATHOLICISM, Week 1

With the ashes having faded from our foreheads and the penitential season of Lent now underway, we offer you some spiritual food-for-thought from the CATHOLICISM series. Matt Leonard, Director and Editor of the series, compiled a collection of weekly clips that relate to each Lenten Sunday's Gospel reading.

For your initial study and reflection, the readings for this upcoming First Sunday of Lent are available here.

Father Barron's sermon for Sunday can be accessed here.

Finally, wat
ch the compiled Catholicism footage relating to the week's Gospel and answer the corresponding questions below.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

1. The life of a disciple demonstrates and necessitates a decision for Christ, but deeper and more important than our own decision for Christ is his decision for us. What is the result of Christ’s decision for us?

2. The Lord Jesus compels a choice. This decision for Christ also contains within it a negation of something else. What does your decision for Christ affirm? What does your decision for Christ negate?

3. The decision for Christ will change one’s life. What change did Christ provoke in your own life? What have been some of the most difficult and rewarding aspects of your decision for Christ?

4. What is so strange or unusual about the Lord Jesus and why do you think that he provoked both amazement and fear?

5. Christ’s identity and mission are one. The same can be said for all the baptized. What are the practical implications of the unity and identity and mission in the lives of faithful followers of Christ?

I know it's Lent - a time for fasting - but my desire/appetite has just been reawakened ... Out-takes?! I feel like (though I am a far cry from) St. Augustine: "I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you; now I hunger and thirst for more ..." More out-takes please! Thanks.

I have a theory. It is called "the cheesecake syndrome"
That is: Say that most days you don't even think of cheesecake, and you go about your regular life. One day, you say "I can't eat cheesecake" or "I should not eat cheesecake" All of a sudden you start wanting cheesecake, wondering where you could buy one, what kinds of cheesecakes etc. LOL Really, it shows the psychiological power of the mind over desire, and how we need to master will over desire...Lent is great. So next time you feel discouraged about your lenten resolutions; just say "aaah is just the cheesecake syndrome" ;)

1)What is the result of Christ’s decision for us?

I believe that Christ gives us the Father, and the love that goes with that beautiful relationship. This love helps us to not only remain connected to God's love, but the graces to help other's know God's love too. With this, comes the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which help us in our spiritual journey with God and others.
2) What does your decision for Christ affirm? What does your decision for Christ negate?
My decision for Christ affirms standing for the goodness, love and committment to do the will of God, that Christ stood for.
My decision for Christ negates my will and that of earthly, sinful desires, and to reject Satan and his empty promises, which means not cooperating with others who want to engage with evil, as well.

3)What change did Christ provoke in your own life? What have been some of the most difficult and rewarding aspects of your decision for Christ?
In every situation, when I've asked God for help, He has always lead me to a place which was better for me to be in, for either my good or the good of others. That doesn't mean that every situation was easy to get through. However retrospectively, I've been able to trace God's healing work. I'm very thankful to God for his interventions, in my life and the lives of those I love. The difficult part for me has been learning to trust that Christ works through others too, who have a different charism. I'm a very sensitive person. I don't like/understand the harshness that I encounter through priests and religious sometimes. It doesn't feel congruent with God's love...it feels mean, like it comes from evil. I learn so much better with communicative patience. Loving communication touches a place in my heart where I don't question intent, I recognize God's love...immediately, and I'm much more likely to cooperate, not run away.
4) What is so strange or unusual about the Lord Jesus and why do you think that he provoked both amazement and fear?
The only way to answer that is to think of how He has worked in my life. His word becomes alive. Different situations in the daily readings match up to my life...even in the smallest of details sometimes, and it is absolutely amazing. The warnings and admonitions can be frightening though-very humbling.
5). Christ’s identity and mission are one. The same can be said for all the baptized. What are the practical implications of the unity and identity and mission in the lives of faithful followers of Christ?
The practical implications are that that when we are united with Christ, Our mission becomes the same as His. To do the will of his Father, while embracing free will. Salvation history shows that for those who work hard to love God and do His will, God sees their love and dedication, and responds in a way that unites us more closely with Him. I try not to predict or imply specifics of how God works, because He saves us all differently.

thank-you for the video reflections. the questions are very searching. I feel it illustrates why Jesus came, to challenge us to the core, to look at our hearts and turn our ideas on upside down. God will change the world through Jesus and the Holy Spirit working through his instruments of love and peace.

Carla, well said. I would add that for me, it is the realization of how the "higher purpose God is pursuing in all that he wills and even in his divine permission of evil."

I thank the Lord for you, Father, and for the Great Work done to feed us, I pray and hope someone will bring these to our Schools, specially to our High Schools, after they graduate most of them go to secular College/University (like my grandkids) and forget their roots, oh, yes, they'll come back someday but I strongly believe that we (the oldest) have an obligation to 'feed' them from the day they received their Holy Communion till death, otherwise we are losing them, we don't have anymore nuns as teacher, they are all married lay teachers with their own personal life...let's pray the Rosary that you Father can come into the Schools. God Bless you and our Country

I agree that deciding for Christ will change one's life. But trying to make Him through Mary very important in our life is important and rewarding. When I am down, I say, Christ, you are our hope and seek his help! That is the way, I think, for a more fulfilling life! Best wishes. Marty

My husband gave me the Catholicism series of DVDs for Christmas. I have learned so much from them. Many times the insights of Scripture, beautiful pictures of Our Lord and our Lady, the landscapes that Jesus, Mary, and His disciples tread, Churches etc. on the DVDs bring me to tears. I have shared them with my friends and family. Thank you, Fr. Barrone for these wonderful teaching DVDs.

1. I think the most important thing is that Christ doesn't wait for us... that He first made a decision for us... that He wants us... that He chose us to be His own... and that He doesn't allow us to remain on our own without His help.

The result of Christ's decision for us is that He not only calls us to find our life in Him, but He provides the grace necessary for our life of salvation and friendship with God.

I am reading John Hardon's Catholic Catechism and his chapter on grace which is the basis of supernatural life. Very good reading and accessible.

1) I struggle to hear His answers for me now. I am in the dessert. I want to hear His decision.I know He is there. I try to be patient.

2) I believe in Him. I yearn for His love. My decision tells me I am His child & my soul longs to be near Him. But not yet in His due time.

3) I ihad to learn that I am not in control of my direction. I can only chose to desire to be with Him. As far as difficult that only appears when I am not totally focused on Him. In deep prayer difficulty is not present. I guess that reveals my desire to struggle with control. As far as rewards My heart gets caught up in the moment when He is present & I find myself full of joy like on a mountain top.

4) I believe people are awed at His abilities to do things we know we cannot do. This leads them to feeling overwhelmed with His love. Yet fear enters when they discover they find themselves falling short of being able to be in His presence.

5) We are all called to share His love with each other & this helps to strengthen us & guides us as we all journey together.
