hi there - thankyou for this

i've recently been confronting some of the hard lessons of the faith - am up to the point of asking - is everything that happens in the world the Will of God?
perhaps another way of asking this is: does Catholocism include any room for (bad) luck?

Does God cause all things? I don't think so. But he CAN cause all things TO BE FOR THE GOOD of those that love Him. In God's hands, even the most horrific events (like my daughter's death at 4 1/2)to end up turning to good ie compassion and serving. Thank you Fr. Barron.

Jeremy,it's my belief that some things are definitely NOT God's will. He may allow it. He may not intercede. But many things are NOT His will. But He is with us through it all.

Actually there's plenty of room for suffering in this LIFE. I believe we as Catholics embrace suffering such as few do. Look at Cathholc Charities and so much more that we do.

As Fr. Barron, St. Francis and so many others have taught us, our answer to deal with that suffering is to get out of ourselves and serve God in some small way.

I hope this helps in your troubles.

Your Brother in Christ,
Al

Thanks Al - appreciated

a related question that is somewhat esoteric - i was watching a video recording of the French Open women's tennis final last week (i am Australian) and as my compatriot Sam Stosur began to fall behind i wondered whether it was any good praying for her ... seeing as it was a recorded game and already concluded (i didn't know the result)

another way of asking the question - is it valid to pray to God to change the past?

best

God permits...

It seem there is a big price one have to pay; to experienced death one understands the value of life - to be unfair and unjust one learns justice - to feel hate and be hated one learns to love and forgive.

It is not just the lacking and missing of something but the pain that goes within is the start of a search.

God permits...through freedom of choice for one to understand the difference and wake up.

Thanks, Fr. Barron

Thanks Gene for the wonderful insights of human suffering and forgiveness. To Fr. Barron, your gifts lead me to God, "To whom shall we go?"

I always thought sin entered the world because of our free will which is the most important gift God gave to man. We now have to live with the effects of this original sin, despite the salvation of Christ, until his return. The idea that we just have to accept it as part of a bigger picture in no way answers the question, why does God allow evil? That is the same logic as a parent hitting his child and telling the child, "well its to give you some perspective on life". While that may be true, it is not reasonable, ordinarily done nor loving. God one would imagine, would be reasonable and loving and so not allow evil only in order to give us some perspective.

A few months ago my Uncle tok my wife and I to Maui. The place is like a Hollywood set! We made it to "The Black Sand Beach".

Fr. Barron, all I could think of was "this must be one of the places where The Lord asked Job, where were you when".

Peace,
Al

Evil is the dark harsh backdrop that the light of goodness, God's eternal love, is accentuated.

Fr. Barron, I wrote this down not long ago . I love your insights. Thank you, revert,

Sometimes we dont' get answers. In the last chapter of John, Peter asks Jesus about John... and Jesus responds "... what is that to you?" I think much of the "imbalance," the evil in the world is the result of our free will. Again, a question that is belyond my comprehension in and of itself. Again, I have keep things simple for me, and for me it all has everything to do with trust, including prayer, i.e., prayer without trust is not complete.

Something that I often think of when I'm going through hard times or just pondering evil and the justice of God is... this life is a test, as many holy men in salvation history have intimated. The test is letting go of the world, having faith and love despite the pain, and even because of it. We must keep letting go and striving to get to the level of the saints who praised God that they could suffer for him, taking part in the redemption of the world.
