I like to see the one and many idea of the Trinity the same way physics explains photon behavior: photon can be expressed as energy, wave or particle. The photon is all of these as it exists - but when we go to measure - our actions literally call forth the expression as either wave, particle or energy. so God is one, but if I pray to Jesus, god will express his being thru Jesus, if I pray to the spirit, god will express thru Holy spirit -- etc. But what I like best with the analogy is that the most wonderful aspect of pure mystery and awe is captured -- physics often asks for us to embrace many concepts that defy 'natural' intelligence. In humility, most of my fiends say I should stick with the shamrock image.

So why is God "He"? If God can be both one and many, surely God can and should be portrayed within human limitations as both He and She, or as I often use S/he. Or does this make the church nervous because it comes close to (God forbid) gender-blending.

Transending perfection like our Creator and/or to repond to our call to be holy, within our human body in this imperfect world. Thanks for explaining my path towards the narrow gate.

God as Creator may have attributes of both genders, yet the bottom line is that He is the absolute Creator of all seen and unseen. Being creative rather than receptive, his character is more male than female. Spiritually, in most cultures the male (yang) energy thrusts the seed of life into the receptive universe. The sun (male) casts light and the feminine moon reflects it back. Got it?
Even though Mary is not a Deity, she is the purest of humanity and gives a rich receptive character to our salvation story in her souls's womb in the great Fiat. Just my observations on the gender bender issue mentioned above. If we spoke a latin based language we would be more aware of gender identification in every day affairs.
