Sermon 615 : True Ambition: The Desire to be with Christ in His Glory : 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, the apostles James and John ask Jesus to be given positions of glory in Christ's kingdom. Jesus reminds us that His moment of glory is His death on the Cross, and that if we want to partake in this glory we must commit to a self-sacrificing love, not a self aggrandizing ambition.

Christianity is great because it is a religion that recognises that little people who will never be honoured by the world can be truely great in the eyes of God.
god bless Fr Barron

Many thanks for a very thought provoking sermon. A few years ago I was speaking to a fellow prisoner of Max Kolbe. He was there the day Kolbe gave is life for the married prisoner. According to this witness the actions of Kolbe had a profound effect on very many in the camp. It lifted their spirits and somehow gave them hope and restored some of their faith in humanity.

I just learned that James and John were nicknamed ‘sons of thunder.’ An odd name for John I thought, because we tend to think of him as the ‘beloved’ disciple who took guardianship of our Lord’s mother. It’s hard to picture him pursuing glory and honour and having lessons to learn. Lord, I want you to fill my cup but I don’t really understand what you wish me to drink. Help me to recognize your love and do what you ask of me. With all my love,

I always enjoy your sermons. They are uplifting and thought provoking. I am reminded here of my favorite saint, St. Monica. Monica lived in the 4th century when Christianity and paganism coexisted in the days of the early legalization of Christianity. Her selfless desire that her family convert to Christianity was fueled by her desire to love and serve God. She accomplished just that but her youngest son was the most difficult one to convert. With the help of St. Ambrose this youngest son of hers was converted. His name is one the most revered names in our Faith. St Augustine of Hippo.
