Um, excuse me? Who says we're not talking "Kindle?" So far (not a complete list), I have a complete Douay-Rheims, a PDF of the Cloud of Unknowing, some scanned essays on chastity from 1800-something all on my Nook, as well as numerous contemporary publications. [Please see this discussion: http://www.wordonfire.org/WoF-Blog/WoF-Blog/May-2011/Spirituality-And-Then-There-Were-Books.aspx] WHY are so many people afraid of eReaders? And, why do they assume the exact same words in high-rez LCD pixels are somehow inferior to those words in soy-based ink on wood pulp? (Y'all do realize the same arguments were raised against paperbacks versus hard covers, right?) This is a *miniscule* technological leap in terms of interface compared to, say, the internet or the printing press. This response just doesn't make sense.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to watching Catholicism. On my netbook. In the middle of the Mojave. : p

I heard you in Omaha this morning. Your words are "on fire". KVSS plays your inspiring talks on Wed. at 8:10 AM, where I found you. Looking forward to that "Catholicism" series. God be with you, and protect you each moment. Thank you!

Kell Brigan,

I think it was the host's attempt at a little humor. No need to take it as if it was some sort of dogmatic pronouncement.

Re. eReaders. A "little humor" is frequently dangerous, and can be indicative of systemic thinking problems. Sorry, Dan, but I think it's becoming yet another of those social litmus tests to poopoo eReaders. Is the assumption that "All REAL Catholics hate IT?" Or maybe, "Anything less than 50 years old is unacceptable to God?" (Some folks at a couple of other Catholic media groups that shall go acronym-less are trying to institute similar coded passwords for acceptance as a "real" Catholic, i.e. "All REAL Catholics hate Harry Potter" (Um, no, actually we don't.) Or, "All REAL Catholics think 100% of feminism was bad." (Wrong.) Or "All REAL Catholics think Vatican II was 100% good/bad." (Wrong redux.) "All REAL Catholics know that anyone who likes Centering Prayer is a Satanist." Etc. Etc. Fill in the blank, at all ends of the political and/or theological and/or social spectra.

I don't like knee-jerk coded assumption password in-group password rituals -- they get used all the time against Catholics, for one thing ("All educated people are in favor of same-sex marriage," etc. etc.) and they're NEVER a useful way to think about ANYTHING. It is interesting that the host caught himself after a couple of seconds, especially since Fr. Barron had just finished talking about using New Media. It's just so scary and disapointing every time I see the ritual process in action. Even with people with whom I agree on some or another issues many leave me VERY nervous about the quality of the thought process that led them to their conclusions.

In this particular case, apparently I'm supposed, for some unknown reason, to not like eReaders. I feel the same way when I crash head-first into this assumption as I felt, say, a few years back when, for equally unknown and mysterious reasons, I was supposed to passionately hate Martha Stewart. Sorry, folks. I didn't get the memo.

Here's what I was reading this morning over breakfast, from Andrew Potter's "The Authenticity Hoax:"Democracy is based on the premise that reasonable people can disagree over issues of fundamental [or trivial, IMO] importance... When the mere fact that someone supports the other side becomes evidence that they have been brainwashed, then the truth is you no longer believe in democracy."

Is it a "branding" thing? Are we clinging to all these "REAL" identity assumptions because we think people should be 100% identifiable at a glance, like so many cans of Warhol's soup?

I bought the book, Catholicism, and can't wait to see the television series. I am relying on EWTN, since the series will not be carried by PBS in my state. I am going to purchase the study guide, too, and hope to encourage my parish to form a study group. The visual media of TV in particular is in need of someone who can reach a large, varied audiance. I hope to see more of Father's sermons and retreat lectures on EWTN, which is available worldwide. Father has an 'HD' face and demeanor that appeals to youth, yet he has the maturity and credibility that older and fallen-away Catholics so long for and need. I'm praying that Father's project to get back on national TV will be taken up by EWTN. Little Flower, use your power, in this hour. Amen
